The OAEM Mentorship Program is designed to connect Disaster and Emergency Management students with Emergency Management and Business Continuity professionals, allowing them the opportunity to gain valuable experience and advice for professional/career development.

Finding a mentor is an excellent way to gain valuable knowledge and advice on pursuing a career in your field. Mentors contribute to the growth of Emergency Managmeent in Ontario, through fostering a new generation of capable, knowledgeable and innovative young professionals.

Connecting people across our EM community in Ontario is key to the mission of OAEM!

 The program at a glance:

Commitment: 3 hours per month. The length of each mentor match is approximately 6 months (Nov-Apr).

Purpose: The relationship between mentors and mentees is viewed as a partnership. Therefore, the Mentorship Program is not intended as a co-op placement service for students, but is offered as a tool for students seeking career advice from successful and experienced Emergency Management /Business Continuity Professionals. There will be great opportunities for networking and attending career-building events. This will be an excellent opportunity to both learn from each other and to develop oneself.

Expectations: The mentors and mentees will set their own contract in terms of expectations and time commitment. OAEM, led by the Education Chair, will oversee the program.

Examples of mentorship opportunities/venues: The exchange can take many forms, including discussion over the phone, online or in person, attendance at workshops, seminars or networking events, job shadowing, tours of facilities or other interactions. Both mentors and mentees should make an effort to facilitate this connection.

Student members: This program is for OAEM Student Members. If you are currently an Ontario student in an emergency management program who is not a current OAEM member, you can sign up to be a student member here: or by contacting the Membership Chair at First year of membership is free for students, and the second year is only $65!
