The presentation will focus on a Pan-Territorial project undertaken in Canada's North, resulting in a number of publications that were developed for use by the community of Persons With Disabilities (PWD) and the public education departments of EMO s and first responder organizations, the training that was provided to first responder organizations and the documents on disability awareness and inclusion that were developed for use in the education system, including a document on student safety for use by the educators to prepare emergency evacuation plans for students with disabilities of all types.

Disability Awareness for Emergency Managers & First Responders 

Understanding the broad needs of persons with a range of different disabilities is integral to providing effective and efficient service to all members of your community. Understanding how a person with mental health issues will react in an emergency situation and the assistance required, is very different from what a person with a mobility disability will need. The presentation will highlight key information about a broad range of disabilities, and how to best provide services that meets the varying needs.

Case Study – Pilot Training of First Responders 

A Fire Chief in Montreal had five deaf members of his family, and after a family emergency realized that his department wouldn’t know how to communicate with them in the event of an emergency.
